Richard Liu is a man of action towards eradicating the poverty he was born in spoke volumes. Though born in a humble background, Richard was a dreamer who visualized a bright future. Being an intelligent kid who understood well the transformation education could bring, Liu worked very hard in his studies.
Richard Liu Qiangdong knew by passing high school exams, he would secure a chance to join one of the prestigious universities in either Beijing or Shanghai. Luckily, Richard Liu passed excellently in the university entrance exams, thus securing admission at the Renmin University in Beijing.
Despite his parents not having money for his bus ticket, the villagers came to his aid because he was a disciplined and responsible kid they trusted. At Renmin College, Richard Liu took a course that matched his interests in politics: Sociology.
Being in a big city that offered multiple opportunities, Liu Qiangdong maximized his free time by taking a side hustle job at a photocopier business while at the same time self-educating himself on computer programming. Not long after he had mastered programming, the demand for programmers emerged, and since he gave attention to detail, he was able to get massive clients.
After using some of the earnings for his personal needs, he saved some, using them to open an electronics business, naming it Jingdong. Determined to grow his business, Richard Liu worked for long hours and never bowed to any challenges. After the SARS epidemic attacked the country, Liu started selling and marketing the company through online platforms, a period in which JD.com was born.
Looking back, Richard praises the epidemic for it marked his breakthrough in the e-commerce industry and is now one of the prominent billionaires globally whose company revenue wise is the world’s third-largest.
