Sudhir Choudhrie is the oldest heart transplant patient. His story is one of belief and hope. The belief that people, in general, are good. After all, he had to rely on someone else to give him a heart. He credits his family’s overwhelming love and support for his survival and not to mention his doctors.
Sudhir Choudhrie had health problems from a very early age that plagued him his entire life. It was discovered that he had a leaky heart valve as a child. These problems finally caught up to Choudhrie, and his health had begun to decline quickly. It had come to the point that a heart transplant was his only hope.
Almost at the last moment, the doctors believed that Sudhir Choudhrie only had about 24 hours to live, a new heart donor for Choudhire was located. A 20-year-old who died in a car accident became his donor. Though Choudhire does not know the identity of the donor, he is forever grateful for his new life.
That transplant took place over 20 years ago, and Choudhire is still going strong. He wrote a book called From My Heart to help other transplant patients understand that there is a lot of life to live after getting a transplant.
Also, after his transplant, Choudhrie turned his interest to Columbia Hospital, which is where his transplantation took place. He became a heavy donor. He wanted to make sure that others would benefit from research and treatments just as he had.
When Choudhrie asked his doctor, Dr. Mehmet Oz, why he did not die, Dr. Oz had a simple response, and that was if your heart is not done beating, it will continue to beat. Choudhrie’s heart was not finished beating. It is this message of hope that Chourdhrie continues to spread every single day.
