Repton School’s Approach To Students’ Mental Health

According to national headlines in England, mental health issues among young people is a problem that is rapidly escalating. Over the last two years, the number of youths seeking help from Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) has doubled. Without a doubt, the 21st century is a tough era for the youth to navigate. Demands from the current education systems, social media pressure, and uncertain economic times make it even more difficult for them. Moreover, they have to face the challenges that come with adolescent years, which most of us can relate to.

Repton School has, however, given its pupils a considerable advantage while dealing with such challenges. They have a pastoral care system which is comprehensive and well established. The system is delivered by expert staff and aims at ensuring that each student receives the tailored support that he or she needs to thrive. Aside from upholding Repton’s aims and values, the system also encourages students to be self-motivated, robust, confident, and resilient young people.

Pupils at Repton School live in houses, which are a home away from home. They carry out their daily activities such as sleeping, working, eating, and living while building a lasting relationship with members of staff and fellow pupils. These houses offer the pupils a family environment. Through the Housemasters and Housemistresses, they have access to regular and constant care. Additionally, the houses have a resident tutor and resident matron. The matron works closely with the School Doctor and Nurse to promote and monitor the health of the students. The houses’ domestic catering teams also contribute to the well being and comfort of the pupils.

Repton School applies the traditional ‘house feeding’ system. Here pupils get to come together and have meals with fellow students and members of staff three times a day. They get to interact and chat about their day, which further strengthens their sense of community. This combination of proven traditional strengths significantly contributes to the mental health of pupils at Repton School.
