Learning From Our Mistakes With Ragnar Horn

How do we cope with failure and learn from the mistakes we have made? This is a question that has been on the mind of Ragnar Horn, the CEO of Taconic AS a lot in the past. The answer for Ragnar Horn is to make sure we learn from our mistakes as business leaders and as people in general.

Horn is a keen cross-country skier who remains a competitive member of the sport in his late-50s, Ragnar Horn believes there are always opportunities to learn no matter what position we have achieved.

One of the biggest learning experiences of the last few years for Horn has been his discovery of the book, “Into Thin Air” by John Krakauer. The book tells the story of an ill-fated expedition to the top of Mount Everest where the concern of the experienced guides about incoming weather was ignored. The book was not only a gripping read for Ragnar Horn but allowed him to learn about the need for protocols and safety measures in all walks of life. The loss of eight lives was a tragedy on Mount Everest that could have been avoided had the experienced guides stuck to their belief that the weather would not allow for a long trek to the top of the mountain.

Ragnar Horn believes the work he has completed could have been improved if he has learned some of the same lessons that were ignored by the guides on Mount Everest. The Taconic AS CEO has taken many of the lessons from the Harvard Business School to his career. By introducing stress tests and safety tolerances such as those that were ignored by the guides on Mount Everest will help us to achieve more like business and community leaders.
