Frank Robinson founded Robinson Helicopter in 1973. Robinson envisioned a helicopter company that was highly committed to air safety. The helicopters are cost effective.
Robinson had introduced their very first helicopter in 1979. The copter was a 2-place piston powered R22. The R22 was a simple design that was easy to maintain and was low cost. This simple helicopter was a favorite among private business owners and flight school. The R22’s price tag encouraged many people to learn to fly helicopters and purchase the small copter after the students got their license.
By 1992, Robinson Helicopter introduced their Lycoming O-540 that had a more powerful engine than R22 Beta II, R22 RR66 Turbine and some other helicopters Robinson Helicopter manufactures includes the 4-place R44 Raven II, and others. Rolls Royce Company developed a helicopter turbine engine for Robinson’s RR300, a version of the RR 25O helicopter series.
After he retired, Frank Robinson’s son Kurt succeeded him as the president and chairman of the helicopter company. The young Robinson remembered his father was interested in helicopter since he was a 9-year-old in 1939. Frank Robinson was a picture of Igor Sikorsky hovering over the landscape in his VS300 on the cover of his Seattle newspaper. Robinson was amazed that one person could come up with such an aircraft. Robinson’s career choice was sealed. The senior Robinson went to college to earn his engineering degree. Upon college graduation, Frank Robinson took flying lessons and earned a pilot’s license and an admirable commercial flight rating to go with flying hours. In addition to learning to fly airplanes, Frank Robinson took an interest in flying helicopters. Robinson was fascinated about how a helicopter can fly and the way the vehicle was made. Robinson worked to build a light weight and easy to operate helicopter.
Frank Robinson began his aerospace engineering career working at Cessna. Robinson’s first assignment at Cessna was designing an experimental aircraft called the CH-1 Skyhook. Frank Robinson left Cessna to worked at Umbaugh Corporation, the McCullough Motor Corporation, Kaman Helicopters, and Bell Helicopters before Frank Robinson started his own helicopter company.
