In what seems like pure science fiction, ZeroAvia is working on a hydrogen-fueled powertrain for commercial aircraft. In other words, ZeroAvia is looking to replace fossil-fueled jet engines and create green technology. ZeroAvia has the ambitious goal of flying hydrogen-powered aircraft as early as 2024 (Techcrunch).
The company has already been successful in the US and United Kingdom with its electric aircraft line. Buoyed by their success, ZeroAvia continues to explore and innovate on alternative aircraft power. Of course, all of this technology and experimentation is expensive, which is why they raised $24.3 million through Horizon Ventures. British Airways also took note of this project and helped to fund the company’s ambitions as well. As of early 2021, the company raised around $74 million for its projects. With the new infusion of cash, ZeroAvia will be able to move forward with its plans and possibly speed up some of the processes.
The first project from the ZeroAvia company is scoped out to be an aircraft on the smaller side, seating 10 to 20 people, and reaching a range of 500 miles. While that project is in the works, the aviation company isn’t stopping there and is planning on building a 2 MW hydrogen-electric engine for commercial aircraft. The target is for planes that will seat more than 50 people and be powered completely with ZeroAvia’s zero-emissions power plant. The timeline for this project is equally aggressive, with commercial flight tests taking place in 2026.
