Tom S Chang MD Proposes Vision Health Tips

Tom S Chang MD is the Managing Partner of Acuity Eye Group based in locations throughout California. He has devoted his training and professional life to addressing many eye conditions including those affecting the retina and overall degeneration. As the COVID pandemic has been ongoing, Tom S Chang MD recently offered several tips for protecting eye health during this alteration in the lifestyle of many. Chang does support the wearing of face masks for medical reasons but adds two suggestions: use over-the-counter eye drops or lubricants on occasion to keep eyes and tear ducts somewhat moisturized. He also recommends the use of eyeglasses for protection coupled with the face mask. Tom S Chang MD, points out that a common condition that has been exacerbated with the pandemic is that of digital eye strain.

Significant increase in the use of computers, tablets, mobile phones, and digital devices for work and leisure are the reasons and technology causing exacerbation of eye strain. Chang recommends observing what he terms the 20/20/20 rule. Take a break every 20 minutes for 20 seconds. Look at an object some feet away that is part of the room and not associated with a digital device. This allows the eyes to focus on something non-digital. Have a significant amount of time spent away from digital devices after spending considerable time on them. At night, or during rest hours, set devices to night mode or turn them off completely. Position screens so they may be a bit lower than the eyes, which forces one to look down on the screen. A prime example is the use of a laptop on a standard table surface. Moreover, have screens a few feet away from your eyes when in use.
