The Career of Paul Saunders

JAMES RIVER CAPITALPaul Saunders might be the founder & CEO of James River Capital at the moment but he was not always the big success he is today. As such, there are many people wondering how he became the owner of his own company. He was born in a small town in Virginia and was one of the best students in his high school class. This is why it was not a surprise when he got into UVA after graduating. During his time on campus, he came to discover his love for economics and opted to declare it as his major. When he got out of college, he went on to work for Warburg Paris Paribas Becker in the fall of 1979 where he worked in their corporate finance department for under a year. He then went to work in the commodities department of a company known as A G Becker and he served in this role for more than 3 years. In the spring of 1983, he accepted a role with Kidder Peabody as their new director of managed accounts and commodity funds. He was with that company until they were bought out in the spring of 1995 at which point he moved back to Virginia. He knew that he needed a fresh start so he decided to bring his family back to his old hometown to start a new business that would go on to be a huge success. This came to be known as James River Capital and it has now been going strong for over 25 years. He named it after the nearby James River and was able to carry over the clients from his old role to this new business. This is good news for him because otherwise he would have to start from scratch and that’s a lot of hard work. He was fortunate enough to be able to stay on good terms with his old company and this has led to them working together to ensure the success of both businesses. He hopes to keep doing well as he looks to the future.
