Can one manufacture service both McDonalds and its competitor Impossible Foods, which supplies fast-food chains such as Burger King with a plant-based burger called Impossible Burger? The Chicago based company, OSI Group, does not feel that it is a problem at all. OSI has space and the capability to meet demand and the integrity to keep all of their clients happy. How did this unusual partnership even happen?
When Impossible Foods introduced their plant-based meat products, they were not prepared for the explosion that followed. Even though they increased production in their facility, it was impossible to keep up with the orders from restaurant chains. To keep up with demand, Impossible Foods needed help. This is when they reached out to the Chicago company. OSI Group is one of the largest food manufacturing companies in the nation. Not only do they have facilities throughout the United States, but worldwide.
What saved Impossible Foods, according to senior vice president of product and operations for Impossible Foods Sheetal Shah, is OSI Group already had the equipment in place at a facility in California. OSI began manufacturing within a month of the agreement and can expand the production if needed at a later time.
This was all excellent news for Impossible Foods. At the time they reached out for help, their sales went up 500% in a quarter. Burger King introduced the Impossible Burger in a small area to test, and its popularity quickly took off. This led Burger King to announce plans to offer the burger in all of its restaurants in the United States.
Even though Impossible Foods is working with the McDonalds manufacturer, they are not worried about any problems. Not only are their products produced in an area away from other products, Impossible Foods still owns the intellectual property to the Impossible Burger. It excites impossible Foods over the fact that OSI can help them develop other plant-based products. OSI is happy to be working with a sustainable company that fits in with their core values.
