For Kevin Guest, Music Multiplies the Power of “Make It Happen” Attitude During Tough Times
Kevin Guest, the CEO of direct-to-consumer health support company UHS (USANA Health Sciences) or USANA , is not a stranger to trying times. As Guest puts it, the events that have the potential to knock us off balance usually aren’t Category 5 hurricanes, but the more successful you are, the more events there are that can take your off course for leading a wholesome, balanced, moral, and successful life.
Guest tells the story of the time his company discovered microbes in their drying process for one of their most popular nutritional supplements. USANA had a decision to make. They could kill the microbes and sell the product. Or they could sell the product with the microbes. Or they could scrap the whole lot.
It was a decision with implications for USANA’s bottom line in seven figures. Guest and his management team decided to destroy the defective product and start over.
Guest also tells the story of the time a competitor wanted to drive down USANA’s stock price with fake news. The competitor promoted a story filled with false accusations against Guest’s company. USANA and guest soon began getting demand letters from the FDA and FTC and calls from nervous customers and worried investors. Guest and his colleagues decided not to let the smear campaign distract the company from its goals. They chose to focus on meeting the needs of their employees and customers, building their business, and executing their business plan. The false accuser eventually went to prison for his statements. Kevin Guest won’t deny that the ability to stick to your principles depends on having a solid foundation in your life. For Guest, it’s his Christian faith.
He cites the familiar Bible story:
“The foolish man built his house on the sand, and when the rains came down, and the winds blew, and they beat against that house, it fell. And great was its fall.The wise man built his house on the rock, and when the rains came down, and the winds blew, and they beat against that house, it fell not, because it was founded on a rock.” But that isn’t to say that Kevin Guest doesn’t benefit from an occasional morale booster. Kevin Guest says that everybody needs to do some kind of performance to stick to their goals. You don’t need to play Brooks and Dunn, Keith Urban, and Collin Raye, as Guest has. But you do need to be accountable to someone, preferably a group of people, to help you stay on track with your goals in life.
