Sustainability Expert Daniel Madariaga Shares Future Pandemic Concerns
Daniel Madariaga is a sustainability and renewable energy expert who lives in Mexico City. He’s self-employed as a consultant and is helping transform it into a smart city. A major focus of his career has been on Mobility as a Service (MaaS), which is a technology that reduces traffic congestion.
He recently shared his thoughts on COVID-19 and future pandemics. Daniel Madariaga said that while COVID-19 isn’t linked to climate change as far as anyone is aware, future pandemics could very well be. He said there are viruses frozen in the Arctic that have been sealed away for millions of years. As the ice freezes, these will emerge once again.

Daniel Madariaga said our immune systems won’t help us when germs from the prehistoric emerge. In 2005, a lab revived some of these viruses and what they discovered was terrifying. One research group found the remains of the 1918 pandemic flu. This flu killed over 50 million people.
He also linked Zika and yellow fever to climate change. Daniel Madariaga said the insects that carry these are now showing up in parts of the world they’ve never been seen before. More and more people will be exposed to these diseases in the future.
